The Transformative Power of Film Residencies: A Reflection on Masterclass with Chris Odeh

Beyond being a filmmaker, I see myself as a film thinker, a film analyst whose work is rooted in observation, study, and meditative reflection. Years ago, before I transitioned fully into filmmaking, I arrived at a profound realization during one of my retreats: every established filmmaker I studied shared two defining phases in their journey. First, their formational process, the people, experiences, and systems that forged their foundation. Second, their manifestational process, the platforms, challenges, and choices that allowed them to bloom and fully express their craft.

Reading Before You Say Action by Chris Odeh confirmed this truth. His journey clearly demonstrates how both processes shaped him into the producer he is today. His formational years, working at Inspire Africa founded by Mo Abudu and managed by Pamela Ofoegbu, navigating being turned down to produced his story “Enitan” at the HomeVida scriptwriting contest, built resilience and sharpened his unique voice. His manifestational years, learning from the challenges of producing Oloibiri and Dinner, then strategically pivoting by studying marketing strategies that contributed to the success of Living in Bondage: Breaking Free and Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story positioned him as one of Nollywood’s most trusted producers.

It is from this wealth of experience that Chris Odeh established the Masterclass with Chris Odeh (MCWCO), a residency that is not just a training ground but a launchpad for emerging storytellers. Through this program, he opens his treasure trove of hard-earned wisdom to equip aspiring filmmakers with both creative and technical efficiency.

Over the years, I have met participants of MCWCO both before and after their residency. The transformation is nothing short of astonishing. Many who once resembled caterpillars in their filmmaking journey emerged as butterflies after the residency, wings spread, vision sharpened, ready to fly. Their growth in discipline, clarity, and execution demonstrates the power of film residencies to catalyze metamorphosis in ways traditional training often cannot.

Award-winning Director Daniel Oriahi, reflecting on his experience working with Chris Odeh’s trained producers on Black Pepper, described them as passionate, driven creatives shaping the future of Nollywood. His testimony underscores the broader truth: residencies like MCWCO are not just about skill acquisition, but about building communities, forging collaborations, and amplifying African voices on the global stage.

Film residencies are, therefore, not a luxury but a necessity for African cinema. They bridge the gap between aspiration and execution, nurture resilience, and empower the next generation of filmmakers to create works that are culturally authentic yet globally relevant. MCWCO, in particular, stands as a shining example, a residency where formational obligation(process) meets manifestational expression, and where tomorrow’s filmmakers are forged today.
