The Wedding Party (2016) is a Nigerian romantic comedy drama that follows the chaotic events of a lavish wedding between Dunni Coker, a 24-year-old art gallery owner, and Dozie Onwuka, an IT entrepreneur from a wealthy family. The film showcases the cultural clash between the two families, the secrets and scandals that threaten to ruin the wedding, and the love and humor that ultimately prevail.
Some of the funny scenes include: the bride finding a pair of women’s underpants in the groom’s jacket, the groom’s ex-girlfriend crashing the party with a revenge plan, the best man losing the wedding rings, the wedding planner dealing with unruly guests and gatecrashers, and the groom’s mother snubbing the bride’s family.
Directed by Kemi Adetiba, the film features a star-studded cast of Nigerian actors and celebrities, such as Adesua Etomi, Banky Wellington, Richard Mofe Damijo, Sola Sobowale, Iretiola Doyle, Alibaba Akporobome, Zainab Balogun, Beverly Naya, Somkele Iyamah and more. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and became the highest grossing Nigerian film of the time. The Wedding Party is a hilarious and heartwarming celebration of Nigerian culture, family and love.
